Node.js is the first topic for the new JavaScript East Bay Area Meetups!

CSUA is proud to host the Eat Bay JavaScript Meetup, founded April 26,
2012, organized by Dan McAulay.

This Thursday 5/17, from 6:30pm-8:30pm, in Soda Hall’s Wozniak Lounge

http://www.meetup.com/EBJavaScript/

Students are encouraged to attend. Hope to see you there!

–Samantha

——————————————————
East Bay JavaScript Meetup:
——————————————————
JavaScript continues to drive web development in new directions.
Node.js brought JavaScript to the server and client side frameworks
like Backbone.js and Ember.js are increasing the popularity of single
page apps. The East Bay JavaScript Meetup Group is a place where
people can discuss JavaScript with some of the most talented
programmers in the East Bay. We’ll be talking about everything
happening in the JavaScript community- tips, tricks, hacks and
frameworks! It’s a great opportunity for Cal students to network,
share the projects they’ve been working on and meet local companies.
——————————————————
First Meeting:
——————————————————
Our first Meetup will be an Intro to Node.js. Here’s a brief
description about it:
Come learn about the basics of Node.js
- Why the web needs Node
- Asynchronous programming
- Testing frameworks
- Writing a web server
This is part 1 of a series of talks. Come ready to code!

Hello CSUA!

Our GM3, where officer elections are held, is coming up: 4/27 6-10pm Woz.
Be sure to get your csua account created at least 1 week ahead of time if you plan to vote.

Elections are a lengthy process, but they’re worth it, so vote!
Here is a list of the 7 politburo positions we will be voting people into:

0) President
1) VP Indrel/Industrial Relations (aka External VP)
2) VP Tech/Technical/Sys Admin (aka Internal VP)
3) Secretary/Treasurer
4) Outreach
5) Events Coordinator: External
6) Events Coordinator: Internal

Current Politburo:
President – Heidi Galbraith
VP Indrel – Jacob Newman
VP Tech – Josh Hawn
Sec/Tres – Jessica Pan
Outreach – Samantha Dove
External Events – Mary Stufflebeam
Internal Events – Hayg Astourian

Position Descriptions:
(0) President:
The President is in charge of getting things done. She/he is our liaison with the department and with other clubs on campus. She/he is the master delegator and the face of the CSUA. She/he runs the weekly Politburo meetings and organizes the passing on of knowledge from one generation to the next.

(1) VP Indrel:
As the name suggests, Indrel is in charge of CSUA’s industrial relations. He/she is our liaison with industry. He/she reaches out to companies and attains sponsors for our events. He/she is also in charge of the jobs board.

(2) VP Tech:
As the name suggests, VP Tech is in charge of our machines, both in the office and in the server room, hardware and software. He/she is the head of our root staff. He/she is our liaison with the campus’s INST and IT services. He/she solves problems and keeps our services (such as our list-servs and our free web hosting) up and running.

(3) Sec/Tres
The SecTres is an amalgam of 3 former Politburo positions: librarian, secretary, and treasurer. SecTres manages our officers, ensures our office space is mostly clean, takes minutes at meetings, handles reimbursements, fills out treasurer forms, and manages our library of CS books. SecTres keeps things organized and running.

(4) Outreach
Outreach has 3 roles: publicizing the CSUA, reaching out to the campus community, and recruiting new members. She/he is our liaison with the campus community. She/he is in charge of the design and distribution of all publication materials for the CSUA and for advertising our events and services. She/he is also in charge of managing our website.

(5) External Events
External events runs our external events, i.e. company sponsored events. She/he is in charge of all logistical planning and day-of execution for each event. She/he makes sure everything runs smoothly during the event and executes crisis management. Capacity to delegate is really a requirement for this role. Example external events are coding for grubs, weekly hack nights, and hackathons.

(6) Internal Events
Internal Events runs our internal events, i.e. anything the CSUA runs without sponsorship. He/she is in charge of all things fun. He/she creates fun events, plans out the logistics of running such an event, and then organizes and runs each event. Capacity to delegate is really a requirement for this role. Example internal events are general meetings, assassins, and paintball.

For a more in-depth description of each position, go here.

Code Something Cool

Prize specs announced!
Asus 24” LCD Monitors

Friday 2/17 – Saturday 2/18
coding starts @6pm
coding stops @noon
Wozniak Lounge + Overflow rooms

Registration is day-of.
We’re giving out private github repositories to teams!

Come to our Kickoff Event!
Thursday 2/16 6:30-8:30pm Woz
Hear about the Hackathon! Get the lowdown on git!
Ness is going to talk about their technologies.
Heroku is giving a live demo of their technology!

Note: Kickoff start time changed from 6pm to 6:30pm.
Note: Kickoff ending time changed from 8pm-8:30pm.

very useful information: All the info!
Note: We’re requiring github submissions. Github has excellent tutorials on how to use git and how to set up a repository on github. Github Tutorials
All the information is available on this post as well; just continue reading. =)

Incentives:

We all have cool projects that we really want to code, but, due to our busy Berkeley schedules, just can’t seem to find the time to work on projects outside of school. Well coders, this is our night! This is your night!

Come out and code something cool!

We will provide 5 large meals: dinner, midnight sushi, early morning dinner, breakfast, and lunch. We will provide unhealthy snacks, healthy snacks, energy drinks, fruit, and food all night long!

We will give out big prizes: 1st place is big shiny monitors, 2nd place is SSDs, 3rd place is Kindle Fires. We’re giving small gifts to two honorable mention teams, an all newbie team, and a good4theworld project.

Logistics:

Coding starts at 6pm Friday.
Coding ends at noon Saturday.
Presentations begin afterwards.

Our wonderful sponsors are Ness and Heroku!

Registration is day-of.

It is important to write a good description of your project (about 1-2 sentences). “We coded a cool project using Kinect,” while interesting, says nothing about your project whatsoever. (Yes, that was my sentence on the registration page last semester.)

Using svn or git for your team is strongly advised and can be set up before 6pm. We judge on whatever code you produce that night.

Our judges include CSUA alumni, representatives from Heroku and Ness, and our very own faculty Brian Harvey!

Teams of 4 preferred.
Teams of 4 students preferred.

Yes, you can code alone or in pairs or in a group of 5 if you want, but we’re only handing out 1 prize to a lone star, 2 prizes to a team of 2, proceeding up to 4 prizes for a team of 4+ people. You’ll have to distribute the prizes amongst your group.

To be eligible for prizes, your team must consist entirely of CAL undergraduates, with teams of 4 or lower receiving preference. The point of this hackathon is to write that hack you’ve always wanted to do, or really want to do right now! Prizes, while super awesome, are merely an incentive to get you to stay up all night long, as is the 24 hours of food.

There are 3 large prize groups! 1st place winners get first pick at the prizes, then 2nd place group, then 3rd place. There are also prizes for newbie, good for the world, etc.

Heroku is super useful for development and I’m sure many of you will end up using them for your hacks. Let it be known that the use of Heroku’s services will not affect judging one way or the other. And in case you didn’t know, Harvey is a big fan of Scheme.

Come! Hack! Thrive! It’s going to be one hell of a night!
