CSUA Video Game Tournament Information

W00t, it's the CSUA Video Game Tournament. Come compete against the best gamers in Berkeley in a variety of games and win cool prizes. Do you have what it takes?

General

Welcome to the website for for the CSUA Video Game Tournament, sponsored by Microsoft! Participants can compete in either Guitar Hero (I, II, and Rock the '80s), Super Smash Bros. Melee, or Tekken 5, or any combination of the three to win a copy of Halo 3 for the Xbox 360. The tournament will be held in the Gelateria Naia Lounge in Lower Sproul, so enjoy some gelato while participating. There will also be copies of tournament games, as well as Halo 3, on free play during the tournament, so even if you aren't participating, come by for some fun and entertainment!

Time and Location

The tournament will be held at 6PM on Friday, November 16 in the Gelateria Naia Lounge on campus (Lower Sproul Plaza).

Games and Prizes

Our game offering is as follows:

  • Guitar Hero I, II, and Rocks the '80s (PS2)
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee (GC)
  • Tekken 5 (PS2)
  • The tournament will be single elimination for each game, and each victor will receive a copy of Halo 3.

    In addition to the tournament games, we will have some copies of Halo 3 for Xbox 360 on free play. Some copies of the tournament games will be running on free play as well.

    Registration

    Participants may sign up for any number of the offered games.

    If you want to sign up, look for us in Sproul Plaza. We'll be the ones playing video games on the nice LCD TV. If you happen to miss us, you can also find us in 337 Soda Hall at almost all hours of the day. Finally, if even that doesn't work, e-mail our Events Coordinator with your name and what game(s) you'd like to participate in.

    There will also be a $2 entrance fee. You can pay us in Sproul Plaza and be fully registered, or stop by our office later to pay the fee. A note about coming to our office: just walk in and ask about registering for the Video Game Tournament, and somebody will assist you.

    Rules

    General

  • Participants must be ready to play when their names are called. They will be given 1 minute thereafter, or they forfeit the match.
  • Participants may (and are encouraged to) bring their own controllers. We will also have controllers to use if any participants do not have their own, but any complaints about "bad controllers" will not be heeded.
  • All controllers will be subject to tournament staff approval. If there is any attempt to gain an advantage by using non-standard controller features, then the participant will be disqualified.
  • Participants may not disturb other participants during tournament play. Any attempt to do so will result in immediate disqualification.
  • Spectators, likewise, may not disturb or communicate with participants during tournament play, including shouting tips and jeering. Cheering, however, is encouraged.
  • Each game will be single elimination. If you lose a match, you are eliminated from the tournament.
  • Matches for different games will be run simultaneously. Participants registered for multiple games will be scheduled in a manner that will avoid any conflicts.
  • The final matches for all games will be held in tandem. *NOTE: Due to unforeseen circumstances, the SSBM final round will be held earlier than the others.
  • In general, please practice good sportsmanship. What constitutes poor sportsmanship will be subject to the judgement of the tournament staff.
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee

  • All matches will be 1v1
  • Up to the semi-finals, each match will be 3 stock with a 5 minute time limit.
  • The semi-final and final matches will be 5 stock with a 9 minute time limit.
  • Each player will secretly inform the appropriate staff member of their character selection before the start of the match.
  • Most items will be on and set to normal frequency. Items that will be off are Food, Maxim Tomato, Heart Container, Starman, Super Mushroom, Poison Mushroom, Cloaking Device, Hammer, and Pokeball.
  • Stages will be randomly selected from the following: Fountain of Dreams, Pokemon Stadium, Battlefield, Final Destination, and Dream Land.
  • Guitar Hero

  • All matches will be Pro Face-Off (or Face-Off in the case of Guitar Hero I) in Expert mode.
  • In a match, each player will select a song to play. The winner of both songs will be declared the winner of the match. In the case of a tie, a tie-breaker song will be chosen at random.
  • Each player may not choose the same song twice in the tournament.
  • With the exception of the final match, the following songs are banned (in the interest of time): Free Bird, War Pigs, Jessica
  • All songs are fair game in the final round. However, the previous rule of no repeat choices still applies.
  • Tekken 5

  • Each match will consist of three standard rounds. The winner will be determined by best 2 out of 3.
  • There will be no time limit for each round.
  • Handicaps for all players will be set to 150%
  • All characters are allowed. However, each player must inform the appropriate staff member of his or her character selection beforehand.
  • The semi-final and final rounds will consist of 3 matches, with the winner determined by best 2 out of 3 matches.
