Objective:

I would like to find a position that makes use of my technical abilities, and my project management and personnel skills. I really enjoy working with the systems and users, but also enjoy leading projects and coaching others. I think that one of my real strengths is that I pick new things up quickly and don’t have any problem relating them to what I already know.

Skills:

I have an in-depth, working knowledge of several flavors of UNIX operating systems (Solaris, SunOS, DEC, HP), and a working knowledge of Windows NT (Server, Workstation and Terminal Server) and Win95/98 in a TCP/IP networked environment. I have specified, installed and maintained centralized servers and filesystems in heterogeneous systems and networked environments. The ability to troubleshoot and resolving complex systems/network problems has always been one of my strengths.

I have led many projects and have directly supervised as many as 12 technical staff (8 years)

Experience:

Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology - Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Portland, Oregon - Manager, Computing Facilities (Feb. 1997 - Feb. 1999)

I planned, organized and led all of the projects related to the computing and network infrastructure used throughout the CSE Department. With a staff of 8, I worked closely internal and external organizations in order to provide the support of their systems and network needs. The CSE network is comprised of about 300 systems of various types and implements many different network technologies including wireless.

PerraTek Corp. Oakland, California

Independent Computer Consultant (Jan. 1996 - Jan. 1997)

I configured network services; upgraded and configured Operating Systems; located, compiled and installed programs and monitoring tools; set up security software. I also set up and maintained electronic mail and instructed users in the use of programs. I worked on several flavors of UNIX systems (DEC, Sun, HP), as well as a variety of PCs running Win3.1 and NT 4.0. All systems were connected to a central server and accessed the Internet through a firewall.

U.C. Berkeley, Center for EUV Astrophysics - Berkeley, CA

Computing Services Manager (Oct. 1992 - Jan. 1996)

Sr. Programmer/Analyst (Mar. 1992 - Oct. 1992)

I worked closely with the Programmer/Analysts and Programmer Assistants in order to develop team efforts that provided quality service for the 100+ systems used throughout CEA. Additionally, I led efforts to prepare realistic, cost effective hardware and software purchases, as well as improved maintenance contracts for the equipment as it came off of warranty. I was also responsible for preparing and maintaining the computing and communications budget.

I also led other projects that spanned several organizational boundaries. One major project, that involved working with outside organizations as well as those inside of NASA/CEA, was a collaborative testbed effort for Direct To Ground (DTG) reception of EUVE science data. The initial test has been successfully completed and NASA is now pursuing alternative methods of data collection for future missions.

The Grass Valley Group, PSD - Grass Valley, CA

Sr. Systems Programmer (January 1991 - January 1992)

It was my responsibility to support and maintain Cadnetix software on Cadnetix systems and Sun workstations. I worked with the vendor to implement systems and software upgrades, and maintain the integrity of the development environment. While working for this organization, I also devised and published an internal instructional Newsletter.

Ampex, Corp., Video Display Division - Redwood City, CA

Sr. Engineer (Feb. 1990 - Oct. 1990)

In addition to the task of maintaining and upgrading the Sun workstations, I redesigned the topology of a network of Sun, HP, Apollos using Token Ring, VAX clusters, Macs using AppleTalk and PCs into a more efficient configuration. I used both Network General and HP network sniffers to gather information about network traffic. In this position it was also my task to evaluate new equipment and make recommendations on system configurations and software applications that would help in the development of the firmware for the products within our division.

Informix Software, Inc. - Menlo Park, CA

Sr. Systems Administrator (May 1989 - Feb. 1990)

As the senior systems support person working with a small team, we maintained a cluster several types of UNIX systems. In addition to these systems, we also had many PCs, Macs and terminals that we maintained for our 400+ user community. I also had the responsibility of maintaining the International WAN connections between our main site and 12 remote sites. Additionally, I held the role of Liaison to these sites for system issues and problems. As part of the support of the systems at the remote sites, I traveled around the country and single-handedly upgrading the operating systems of the fileservers at the 8 US sites.

Sun Microsystems – Catalyst Marketing Program, Mtn. View, CA.

Systems Administrator (Dec. 1988 - May 1989)

It was my responsibility to support the fileservers and workstations used by 25 marketing staff members. This involved everything from doing Ethernet taps and install new systems, to writing and maintaining automated backup scripts (which I did using UNIX Shell and AWK). It was also necessary to give one-on-one instruction to users who were new to the Sun workstation environment. I not only instructed them on how to use their workstations, but many of the applications as well.

Advanced Decision Systems - Mtn. View, CA.

Systems Programmer (Nov. 1986 - Dec. 1988)

As part of a small support staff, we maintained the systems, network and applications used by LISP researchers and supporting staff. The environment that supported about 140 users was a mix of workstations and fileservers. My job included all aspects of maintaining user accounts; monitoring, maintaining and upgrading the operating system of the equipment; troubleshooting system, peripheral, and network problems; many specialized programming efforts.
