Amir's Photos -- Hollister Hills

July 2001
Now that I've got a Wrangler, there's no point in just keeping it parked in the driveway... it's time to test out what my new rugged baby can do. These pictures were taken at the Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area, which is essentially just a huge chunk of land in central California (near Salinas) with lots of off-roading trails of varying difficulty. I finally was able to realize my Wrangler's potential, as well as a glimpse of all sorts of exotic ways to modify it to make it even more robust. Check us out...

Here we are, warming up for the day, by trying to make it across this somewhat narrow path. One option was to drive with one half of the car IN the ditch; the other option was to drive off to the left, hugging the bushes. Seeing how it was my first time, I opted for making out with the bushes.
In this nice Kodak moment, with my dad and bro inside the car, on top of a big sand dune. And of course, there's my baby.
And now, for the biggie (for us) (for the day). Bro and I start go through the gate, down the path, trying making our way up...

...this bad boy: a large staircase of logs and rocks. It was surprisingly steeper and more difficult than it looks, The red Landcruiser shown here was unable to make it up, while the skeleton pickup was able to make it up--backwards!

We were trying to make it past the first bump, the biggest of all of them, but I drove a little too fast; I ended up catching a little bit of air and then coming down with a little crash. Nothing like the sound of metal on rock. Luckily, this more experienced guy was there who was able to give us useful advice. A 4" body lift would have been useful here.

And we're up! I gassed it just enough to make it past the first bump and then I just kept gassing it mo'. My baby's first steps!

Up at the top, I of course gassed it a little too much again, right as I was making a turn. Note my bro clinging on to the car for dear life.

And finally, returning back after a long, sweaty, and slow-moving minute of uphill hell.

And here are what some other people were doing:

Twisting it up a bit.
Don't try this at home.
Nice parking job...
