Amir's Photos -- Portland, Maine

May 2003
In an attempt to discover more of our "history", Ricky and I drove up to the famed (at least among EE people) Old Orchard Beach, Maine to see the "Wavelets Ave." sign with our own eyes. However, we decided to stay in Portland, Maine (Maine's largest city) since it seemed livelier and more interesting, and then we just visited Old Orchard Beach. Portland turned out to be an exciting little city with lots of things to do, and we'd both like to visit again. For more detailed information on this trip, visit Maine Journal Page.

Off we go...this trip was initially supposed to take place in June, but on a Friday at the end of May, my research dog experiment was cancelled so all of a sudden we had a free weekend. Quickly, we packed, found directions, and were on our way. Ricky is shown here, holding the directions onto the dashboard.

Our room in the quaint little Inn at St. Johns, a peaceful hotel near downtown with less than 20 rooms. We highly recommend this inn to anyone who visits Portland.

Waiting for our order and adding to the journal outside the Portland Public Market on day 2. We each started the day at 11am with a beer and good seafood. This market is similar to the Pike's Place Market in Seattle. Another place we highly recommend in Portland.

You can't go to Maine without a taste of authentic Maine lobster. Here we are at J's Oysters after a great meal of lobster, crab, steamers, and beer. We spent four hours working our way through that meal, so naturally we had to document it with a photo. And you guessed it...we definitely recommend J's to everyone.

Hi kids, do you like lighthouses? If so, come to Portland, Maine, where you can't turn a corner without seeing a stupid lighthouse, either real or miniature (as pictured here). Personally, I did not have any feelings towards lighthouses before this trip. Now...I hate them.

Killing some time before we leave Portland for Old Orchard Beach on day 3. We're in some athletics store, trying out the miniature bikes.

We really don't remember what this was, except that that beaver/monkey/dog thing was the famed mascot of their local minor league baseball team. Ricky is shown here posing with him/it.

And we're finally here! After a year of skepticism, 505 miles of roadtrip, and 2 hours of driving back and forth through Old Orchard Beach while calling motels and searching the web on our cell phones, we found it: the sign for Wavelets St! We were unfortunately a little disappointed that we didn't see the Dead End sign nearby (as expected) but that's OK. Our mission was now complete.
