Computers, computers, computers (or, "My Computer")...
| The hardware: | The dirt on it: |
| Valdez Industries' Super Deluxe 133 MHz processor | It's suffice for my computing needs. However, I can't use the clock multiplier to overclock it since the CPU is from the accursed 'SY022' batch. The chip can be overclocked by increasing the bus speed by installing it onto newer motherboards. |
| Intel Endeavour motherboard | The sole nicety of this motherboard is its built-in SoundBlaster Vibra chip. Otherwise, it's pretty old stuff (the bus speed maxes out at 66 MHz). |
| 64 MB EDO RAM | There's not enough! I need more, more, more! |
| Quantum Bigfoot 1.2GB HD | It's big and slow: kinda like Homer Simpson. It's also permanently attached to my computer case. |
| 1.44 MB FD | It's quiet. "No big whoop." |
| IMES 6X CD-ROM | IMES is their engineers' acronym for "I Must've Erred Somewhere" . Sometimes the thing works, but often it doesn't. It is standard with ATAPI, but I don't think that means much. |
| Diamond Multimedia video card (S3 Trio64 chip w/2MB DRAM) | The hardware and the overall performance of this board is mediocre at best. What's worse, the drivers by Diamond Multimedia are abysmally old (nine months to a year, depending on which OS). Users of this card have to fall back on the drivers written by S3, the chipset's company. Normally, users rely on drivers written by the boardmaker (in this case, it would be Diamond Multimedia). This product is one screwed-up piece of crap because Diamond Multimedia is incapable of supporting their product! I will never buy another product by Diamond Multimedia until they change their driver-development policy. Grrr... |
| Phoebe 28.8kbps modem | Like the blonde ditz on "Friends", this modem is flaky, cheap, and dumb. |
| Altec Lansing Multimedia ACS53 Computer Speakers | This speaker system is cool. I like them! =) |
| Microsoft serial mouse | Very nice mouse. It makes Web-browsing a lot more comfortable. |
| KFC 15-inch monitor | I heard that Kentucky Fried Chicken actually sued these guys for using the "KFC" acronym. (side note: the place I bought the monitor from was half a block away from a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise). |
| The OSes: | Notes: |
| Windows NT 4.0 (SP3) | This is the OS I use for schoolwork and web-browsing. I wanted to use Win95 because it's less resource intensive, but it was too damned flaky on my system. |
| Windows 95 (OSR2) | I use this for games. |
| Linux (Slackware 2.0.0) |
I'm still getting my feet wet with Linux. I haven't done anything productive yet, but it's awfully fun to tinker with. |
