The Forum

The Colosseum

Baths of Carcalla

The Baths of Carcalla once held 1,500 people at a time. These were the most interesting ruins I saw in Rome: almost complete-looking in places and awe-inspiringly grand in scale.

The Pantheon

The Capitoline Hill/Capitoline Museums

The museums are clustered around the Piazza di Campidoglio, designed by Michaelangelo.

The Trevi Fountain

If you throw a coin in the fountain, you're supposed to be guaranteed a speedy return to Rome. Throw another coin in the fountain, and you're supposed to fall in love in Rome. The second coin didn't work, but we'll see if I find myself coming back anytime soon ...

Vatican City/Saint Peter's

Interior views. View from the top of St. Peter's. (Home to all the conveniences; just below the dome are restrooms and a souvenir shop.)
On your way through the Vatican Museums to see the Sistine Chapel, you're led through rooms and rooms of astonishing frescoes. One of my favorites was this hallway, lined with detailed maps reflecting the state of the world around the time of the Renaissance.
