*Finland-Swedish Expressions While "Finlandssvenska" is not a separate language, there are some expressions which Swedish speakers from Sweden find a bit unusual or archaic. This list is based on Harry Stenmark's book on Finland-Swedish idioms, and partially on the author's own observations.

Åbo Akademi's Home PageThe only Swedish-language university in Finland. Departments/Professional Schools are located in both Åbo (Turku) and in Vasa (Vaasa).

Famous Finland Swedes

* Anders Chydenius An 18th century Finnish politician and economist, his chief work, Den Nationnale Winsten described free market principles and the idea of an invisible hand already in 1765, 11 years before Adam Smith "introduced" the same ideas in The Wealth of Nations. It was first published in English in 1929.

* Tove Jansson, a Finland-Swedish author and artist is the creator of the "Moomintrolls". This page includes a brief English bibliography of both Jansson and her creations. The Moominvalley page in Estonia has a rather incomplete list of what Jansson's different creatures are called in various countries.

*C.G.E. Mannerheim A very important President and Field Marshall. One of the most important Finns of the 20th century.

J.L Runeberg National poet of Finland. He wrote, among other things, the national anthem and his birthday, February 6th, is a national holiday in Finland.

Jean Johann Julius C. Sibelius, is considered to be Finland's greatest composer. His works, such as Finlandia and Pohjala's Daughter are performed and loved throughout the world. To hear some of Sibelius' masterpieces, click here.

Edith Södergran. She was one of the first modernist poets in all of Europe. This link is to some of her poems (in Swedish)

Linus Torvalds. He is the young inventor of the Linux operating system, a version of the UNIX computer operating system. He has quite a cult following, mostly because he created a very, very good system at a young age with a colloquy of "hackers" across the net and it is distributed for free.
