Getting a Job in Visual Effects
This section will eventually be a fairly comprehensive guide to getting
that dream job you've always coveted.
The biggest problem, as I have often heard it, affects mostly those who
have had little or no on the job experience. This is the chicken and egg
issue of the demo reel. The power and importance of a good demo reel cannot
be overstated. So how exactly should one proceed when one has gained some
knowledge and skill but has no where to show it off?
The first assumption is a fairly large one and that is that the skills you
wish to exhibit you have actually gained through hands on use of some nifty
software tools on a fairly capable machine that you have at least intermitant
access to. This may be at a school, job, friend's, etc...The most basic need
that you will have in generating your reel is a system to do many hours of
work on. This machine dosen't have to be anything special just so long as
you have access to the tools you need. when the time comes to do the final
edit and tape out of your work then a fast machine with capable i/o will
become a necessity but not so for day to day tweaking (although it would be
nice).
As my own reel progresses I will try to provide examples of its contents.
Basic Demo Reel Tips
- Keep it short: Put only your best work on your reel
- Edit: A good edit will keep your audience interested
- Story board: Make a plan as to what you will include and how
- Elaborate: Tell your viewers what specifically you contributed to your shots
- Know your viewer and your goal: Make sure your content is appropriate
- Use a standard format: Unless otherwise requested use vhs or svhs
- Important Info: Make sure your name and contact info are on the case, tape, and reel
- Check every tape you send out: DO IT
- Your master and duping: Consider springing for a high quality master and reputable duping facility
- Don't expect your tape to be returned
- Freshness dating: send updated reels to show your latest work
MORE TO COME.....
Ill be adding more to this section according to what you
request.
