Cycling the California Coast

The California Coast is a dream in September. Sure, the days aren't long, and the nights can be cold, but it's your best chance to get dry, clear weather on the coast. The central valley temperatures at this time would either be dropping, or there could even be an offshore breeze, keeping the coast warm and dry, and the dreaded fog away.

You only get 2 weeks of sunshine on the coast a year in Northern California, so treasure them!

As you can see, I was not the only cyclist on the coast with the bright idea of doing this ride in September. I saw plenty of Germans (someone told me, "after labor day, all the tourists become German"), and plenty of cycling couples on Tandems.

On the Mendocino coast. Look at that beautiful deep blue Ocean! My first day on the coast was spent at MacKerricher State Beach. The beach was gorgeous, but the wind cold. The German tourists started a fire at night that was nice and toasty, though---that's what friends are for! Halfway home, I couldn't resist getting that photograph.

Those seastacks do remind you of the Oregon Coast, don't they?

View from a restaurant in Bodega Bay. Different camera angle, same restaurant. View from the road on the way to Point Reyes station.

The road is often long, but never lonely. Well, it can be lonely, but with the Ocean on your right, and beautiful warm weather, how could anyone love it! The golden gate bridge, the gateway to that glorious city: Baghdad by the bay. Food and friends await!

After a trip like this, you return home and sigh, for it was too short and too sweet.
