Jean-Paul Gaultier

Jean-Paul Gaultier

Gaultier... What's there to say? Being one of my favorite designers, Gaultier will take any dare! Without any limits, this is the man that creates skirts and wrap-arounds for men, and see through mesh shirts for women.

History
"Interested in fashion from an early age, Gaultier was at fourteen presenting minicollections of clothes to his mother and grandmother, and at fifteen had invented a coat with bookbag closures, an idea he was to use in a later collection. When he was sev enteen, he sent some design scetches to CARDIN, for whom he worked as a design assistant for two years. Other stints followed at Esterel and PATOU, after which he turned to freelancing in 1976. Once on his own, Gaultier rejected the attitudes of his couture training, reflecting much more the spirit of London street dressing. He has become the bad boy of Parisian fashion, using his considerable dressmaking and tailoring skills to produce ir reverent send-ups of the fashion establishment. His juxtapositions of fabrics and shapes are unexpected and often witty, such as lace covered over voluminous gray wool knits, over scaled coats over tiny vests cropped above the waist. His considerable commercial success is backed by an Italian firm for Europe and America, another back in Japan."

Some of Gaultier's best lines include his couture Jean-Paul Gaultier collection, his retro JPG collection, and his more hip and casual Gaultier Jean's line.
