8 August

I had some ill-defined dreams last night, and awoke to
find that my guest had a similar experience, such that she spent
most of the night awake.  She wouldn't elaborate more, but
I feel that her dreams were more concrete than mine.  She
also asked me whether I owned a cat, to which I replied,
truthfully, that I hadn't in quite some time, much to my idle
regret.  She finished her morning tea without any further
comment, and as morning grew towards noon, re-bundled her
pack, thanked me for my hospitality, hoisted her fiddle case,
and struck northwards into the cloudless day.

I was sorry to see her go, but must admit I'm
not surprised much.

One curious thing of note: as she was heading
towards the main road, a bird alighted on the railing of
my porch and joined me in staring after her departing
back.  Or such I assume, for in looking more closely at
my unexpected avian companion, I found I could discern
no eyes in its head -- or elsewhere, for that matter.
It had an unusually long beak, and stayed motionless
until my ex-guest had disappeared from view.

It then spread an impressive wingspan and
flew off, also heading northwards.

I have no idea
how it could possibly
navigate -- perhaps
through sound, as bats
are purported to do...
although I detected no ears
on the thing either.  All

that adorned its skull was a beak.

I sat on the porch awhile after the dual departure and then went inside to reheat the kettle.

It is afternoon now, and I find I'm tired already.  I think I'll have a nap before setting about dinner arrangements.
