You've reached the home page of Tom Holub, perhaps better known as Mojo. As of 7/15/96, I am in the process of moving most of it to a commercial service provider, so there are a lot of outdated or broken links.
See my Best account for more recent information.
I'm a part-time student and full-time staff member at U.C. Berkeley. I'm studying Computer Science, and working doing computer support for Letters and Sciences Computer Resources. I am active in the Computer Science Undergraduate Association and am on CSUA machine staff on a volunteer basis.
My work office is 455 LSA, and the phone number is 510-642-9069. I can be reached there between 8 and 5 if I'm not out fixing stuff. After that, I can sometimes be reached in the CSUA office (343 Soda Hall ), 510-642-7453, or at home, 510-658-5808. Really, though, the best way to get in touch with me is by e-mail, tom@csua.Berkeley.EDU. For work-related stuff, please use tom_holub@ls.Berkeley.EDU.
I spend a lot of time playing Netrek, a 16-player graphical real-time game loosely based on Star Trek. It's way cool. If you're interested in checking it out, I maintain the FAQ lists for rec.games.netrek. I also help run the International Netrek League.
Netrek isn't the most visually stimulating game (its strength lies in its good balance of teamwork and mayhem), but here are some screen captures anyway.
I'm the captain of the Berkeley-based team, The Golden Bears. We are constantly in a rebuilding mode, so if you're interested in joining (and you're in the Bay Area), send me mail. We managed to crush a number of tedious clue stacks to win the Fall 1996 INL.
Here's a list of upcoming Bears games. GO BEARS!
I'm also an avid bicyclist. In addition to using my bike for everyday transportation (I haven't owned a car for 8 years), I do a lot of recreational cycling, and I organize bike rides for the CSUA. Here are some of the routes we have used. They're all BART accessible and fun for beginning or intermediate cyclists. If you're interested in joining the CSUA rides, mail ride-bike-request@csua and I'll put you on the mailing list.
I've written up a number of essays on cycling topics, mostly aimed at casual cyclists.
UC Berkeley currently doesn't allow cycling on most of its roads and pathways. I think this is unfair to cyclists and a violation of our right to travel and right to equal protection under the law. I've been cited for riding on campus, and I'm currently in the process of challenging my citation. Here is the legal brief I've submitted to the court.
My other main time sink is bridge. I also helped found the ACBML (or "the ACBL Can Bite Me League"), a group of bridge players with the radical, shared idea that bridge is supposed to be fun.
