Embrace Democracy in Taiwan

Live Presidential election vote counting

In Taiwan, the first ever direct Presidential election has just begun, while China is conducting (see news below) military exercises close to islands controlled by Taiwan, after its missile tests and joint naval and air force live-firing exercises from March 8 to 20. The current exercises will last from March 18 to 25. On March 8, three missiles were launched to two test areas off Taiwan. The fourth missile was launched early morning (Taiwan time) on March 13.

You can send your protest to Chinese President Jiang, Zemin and PRC embassy in your area. Send your appeal for support to Securty Council members in the United Nations, US President and Congressmen (a few suggestions from the Senate Webmaster), and policy makers in your country. If you are not a constituent in your area now, share your views with your local friends, teachers, and ask for their support in wrinting to express their concerns.

In its attempt to intimidate Taiwan and destablize the election, China has conducted numerous missile tests and military exercises since last June. China has long regarded Taiwan as a "renegade province" since its Nationalist (Kuomintang) rival fled to Taiwan in 1949, while actually Taiwan has never been governed by People's Republic of China.

With the development of democracy, along with its mixed cultures of natives and early/late Chinese immigrants, Taiwan has become significantly different from China. While few denies the past ethnic, linguistic, and historical ties often (over-simplified) argued by China, the totalitarian country and its people keep missing the points of the overwhelming needs for democracy and freedom by people in Taiwan. The other well-known fabrication of Chinese propaganda is US and most countries recognize Taiwan is part of China while this has never been found in any US legal documents. US and most of other countries merely acknowledge Chinese position in its diplomatic rhetoric to softly ignore Chinese claim.

Taiwan has departed from 1949 long ago, but China seems not. The ongoing belligerent act again reminds us that China has yet to learn the art of negotiation and the value of peace. It is time to educate Chinese democracy and humanity, by standing up to them.
