Let Democracy Flourish in Taiwan and Stop China`s Aggression Now
On Wednesday, March 13 between 11 AM and 1 PM, hundreds of Taiwanese-Americans
from St. Louis area will gather in front of Old Court House to protest Chinese
missile tests and exercise with live ammunition near Taiwan coast. China had
conducted missile test targeting two Taiwanese seaports 30 and 12 miles off the
coast of Taiwan on March 8. We, more than 10,000 Taiwanese-Americans here, are
outraged by this blatant Chinese provocation. These missile tests and military
exercise are purely naked threats against democracy. China intends to intimidate
the 21 million inhabitants of Taiwan because Taiwan is scheduled to their
president directly on March 23, 1996 for the first time.
China claims Taiwan to be a renegade province. However, since its founding in
1949, the Communist China has never ruled Taiwan for a single day. In fact,
Taiwan and China have been separate political entities for over 100 years.
Their perpetued separation was stipulated in the Treaty of Shimonoseki signed in
1895. Taiwanese are now prepared to determine for their own future by the
ballot. Regardless theoutcome of this election, this is a bona fide exercise in
democracy. The election there on March 23 deserves the respect and support from
us in this community. Communist China, in contrast, has no tolerance of
democratic movement with notoriety for abusing human rights, suppressing
political dissents and pirating American intellectual properties.
We urge the United States government and all friends in St. Louis to support the
democratization process in Taiwan and to denounce the misdeeds of China. We are
calling to condemn such military aggression. Let democracy flourish and let
Taiwanese decide their own future by ballots.
