Statement by
Taiwan Association of University Porfessors

The Chinese government announced a series of missile exercices on the coastal aeras of Taiwan during March 8 through 16 1996, the act of which has seriously violated the sovereignty of Taiwan and the security of the people. Taiwan has never been part of China, but the Chinese government had been constantly threatening the Taiwanese with military operations. The imminent exercices will virtually blockade our harbors and be considered declaring war against Taiwan. The Taiwan Association of University Professors is herewith making the strongest portest against the Chinese.

At this critical moment, however, the Premier of Taiwan has made a flattering statement toward China-restating the ruling party's position for the so-called "Chinese unification" and against the independence of Taiwan. Such a statement is equivalent to a recognition of the Chinese aggressive act as an issue of nterior nature or even as entirely legitimate.The TAUP expresses its strongest protest against the Premier's weak and shameful attitude. On the other, it urges all peace-loving people and nations around the world to support the Taiwanese opposition to the Chinese aggression.The TAUP strongly requires that to face up to China's hostility, the government has to immediately take the measures as follows:

A. The presidential election is not to be called off for whatever reason;

B. Terminate the economic, cultural and related exchanges between the two nations and prohibit the Taiwanese from travelling in China;

C. Thoroughly investigate if Chinese spies and their fellow-travellers are hidden in Taiwan and prevent the illegal Chinese immigrants from infiltrating into the country;

D. Reinforce defense capacities in every respect and urge the people to stringently lead a wartime life;

E. All presidential candidates should unanimously proclaim that Taiwan is a sovereign state and that they will defend the nation against the aggression from China;

F. The Legislative Yuan should call an emergency council, denouncing the aggression and working out defensive measures.
